We all know that there are quite a few ways to cook the perfect steak, but getting it right isn’t quite as simple as throwing on some BBQ sauce and throwing it over the coals.
Take your time with this one, folks! Since it doesn’t take long to cook a steak properly, make sure you aren’t doing anything else while you wait.
Preparation
The first thing you should do when cooking a steak is to get your pan or grill nice and hot, so pre-heat the oven/grill/skillet before you touch anything with your hands! The hotter it is, the better it cooks. Once everything’s ready, give your steak a good coating of salt and pepper, and add some oil for extra flavor.
Cooking the Steak
The perfect steak needs to be cooked quickly at high heat in order to lock in that flavor. If you’ve ever had a cheap supermarket steak or one from a cheap restaurant, you’ll know how important this is. There’s a good way to check if your steak is hot enough, and that’s by sticking a finger in it! It should be hot enough so that you only have to touch it for a second. If you leave your hand on it for any longer than 2 seconds, you’re going to burn yourself!
If your pan/grill/skillet is large enough to fit both steaks inside without touching each other, then you’re ready to start cooking.
Put the steak in for 1-2 minutes on each side (depending on thickness and how you like it cooked).
However, if there isn’t any space between your pieces of meat, only put one in at a time.
The Secret to Perfection
The most important step in your quest for culinary perfection is allowing the steak to sit after cooking. If you cut it immediately after taking it out of the pan, all the juices will run out and make it dry and tough, even if you’re really hungry!
After about 3-5 minutes on a hot plate, your steak should be ready to eat.
Now, we know you want to tuck in right away and start feasting but hold your horses!
The first bite should be taken without any sauce, as it will taste very different from how you imagined. If you prefer it more done than medium-rare, then, by all means, have a second tasting after the sauce has been added.
We don’t want to put any pressure on you or anything, but this is going to be a life-changing moment!
If you’re still not happy, then try another steak in a slightly different way. There’s no accounting for taste after all!
A medium-rare steak should feel springy when pressed lightly with your thumb. If you think it needs a bit longer, then you can always put it back in the pan/grill/skillet for another minute or two.
Don’t pierce your steak with a fork, as this releases all those tasty juices and turns them into steam, leaving you with a dry and tough piece of meat. If you like your steak well done, then we suggest you look for another recipe.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to cook the perfect steak!
