Your home is your safe haven. It’s where you come back to after a long day and let all of that stress just melt away. You want it to be a place that you love, and that makes you comfortable and happy. There are plenty of things we can do to our homes in order for them to feel more like a home, but if you’re on a budget, many of them can be difficult. I’ve found five ways that are easy and inexpensive to help your home feel more like a home and less like just an old place where you live or stay:
This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to improve the feel of any room in your house. There’s just something about a bunch of books that just makes it seem homier, no matter who you are. Start by taking every single book off of your bookshelf. Even if you feel like you NEED all of these books in your life, I promise that when you’re finished with them, they will not lose their value. Then go through each of them and pull out the ones that you know you’re not going to read again. You can sell these at your local used bookstore or take them down to a thrift store like Goodwill. Don’t forget to purge all of those books from your Kindle as well! Once you’ve gotten rid of the books, start reorganizing them by color and the author’s last name. If you have a ton of books, I’d probably do this over a couple of different days. It could also be a great thing to do with any other adults or teens that live in your house as well!
After years of living in an apartment, I FINALLY decided to make the investment and purchase some nice dishes. I got the absolute cheapest ones that I could find from Walmart. They’re plastic, and they have a greenish color to them, but as long as I keep them clean, you can’t tell at all. It’s really made a difference in how comfortable I feel eating my meals on a daily basis. We actually take our dishes out of the cabinets only when we use them now. The rest of the time, they’re hidden away in our bedroom closet.
When you have nice dishes or pretty decorations that are just sitting around taunting you, it makes it really hard to spend your time at home feeling comfortable and happy. The problem is that if you spend an entire day getting rid of all of these things, what will you have left? The solution is to rotate these items every couple of months and only put the ones that bring you joy out on display. I like to keep all of my decorations and plates and such in a gift bag that hangs up behind our bedroom doors so when we rotate them, they’re nice and hidden from sight.
