If you want to keep your dog off the furniture, there are several options available to ensure that your pet stays safe and out of trouble.
1. Training
To train a dog to stay off the furniture, it is useful to get them used to staying on specific areas of the floor or even in their crates for short periods. Dogs learn best through positive reinforcement, so be sure to reward them for good behavior when they follow instructions. It is important to be consistent with commands and never punish or shout at a misbehaving dog, as this can cause additional problems down the line.
2. Crate training
Dogs prefer soft surfaces like carpets and beds compared to hard floors, so if you put them in one room and shut the door, they will look for a more suitable area and quickly learn that furniture is off-limits.
3. Restrict access to certain areas of the house
If you work long hours and don’t want your dog rummaging around when you’re not there, try putting them in specific rooms like the kitchen or garden temporarily until they learn where it’s safe. You can also use baby gates to keep them out of certain parts of the house until further training is complete. It is important to remember, however, that these are not effective in all cases, so if your pet displays any aggression or unusual behavior, then this should be avoided immediately.
4. Training collars
There are several options available if you want to keep your dog off the furniture. With training collars, you can prevent them from jumping on chairs or couches when you are not around. Some available products include spray deterrents which make a loud noise when they attempt to jump up, and inbuilt motion sensors, which activate electronic fences in areas where they are allowed to be.
5. Use household items to deter behavior
It is not always necessary to buy expensive equipment to train a dog, and indeed, many household items serve the same purpose. For example, using tin cans with coins inside produces vibrations and sounds whenever it’s shaken and will teach your pet that this is an unpleasant area for their paws. You can also use double-sided tape or plastic sheets on surfaces that you don’t want them to touch.
6. House rules
Dogs are pack animals, so it is important that you establish yourself as their leader at all times, so they know who is in charge. If your dog jumps up on the furniture, for example, either push them off or tell them ‘no’ firmly, then guide them back down onto the floor. It may take some time to master, but eventually, they will understand that this behavior is not acceptable and be trained to stay off the furniture permanently. With enough dedication, patience, and perseverance, however, any pet can be trained to stay away from inside areas inside the house if they want to.
